New Abbey
A charming village 6 miles outside Dumfries containing the splendid remains of a late 13th century Cistercian abbey and a carefully renovated water-powered mill in full working order. (Both Historic Scotland properties). Also nearby is Shambellie House, a delightful costume museum and gardens.
 
Robert Burns
Burns spent the last 6 years of his life in Dumfriesshire and wrote many of his famous works while resident here. Take a walk through the town and see the house where he lived and his Mausoleum where his remains are buried. Or visit his favourite watering holes including the Globe and the Hole in the Wa'. The Robert Burns Centre, is situated on the west bank of the river Nith is also worth a visit.
 
Threave Castle and Gardens
A massive tower situated on an island in the river Dee. Ring the bell and the steward will come to ferry you over. Threave Gardens are a delight all seasons but is best known for its spectacular springtime daffodils. By Castle Douglas. Historic Scotland and NTS respectively.
 
Drumlanrig Castle
The Dumfriesshire home of the Duke of Buccleuch and Queensberry KT. The castle is made of local pink sandstone. Inside there is a renowned art collection, including works by Leonardo, Holbein and Rembrandt. An impressive 300 year old architectural masterpiece.
