Case 83
Unfused transverse process
Neck post RTA
This patient attended the Casualty department with a whiplash injury following a road traffic accident. He complained of mild neck pain.
Findings
This AP view of the cervical spine demonstrates lack of fusion of the right transverse process with the body of the firdt thoracic vertebra. The transverse process develops as an accessory ossification centre, but occasionally fusion does not take place. This should not be mistaken for a fracture. Note that the process has a well corticated margin all the way around, which is not consistent with a fracture.

Diagnosis
Unfused transverse process
