Case 70
Recurrent craniopharyngioma
A young adult with recurrent headaches
Findings
The lateral skull film demonstrates a previous frontal craniotomy. Surgical clips are visible in the region of the craniotomy.
On closer inspection there is some faint irregular calcification in the suprasellar region.

Diagnosis
Recurrent craniopharyngioma
Discussion
The patient had previously had surgery to remove a craniopharyngioma, and the calcification was present in an area of recurrent tumour, confirmed on cross sectional imaging.
Craniopharyngioma is the commonest cause of a suprasellar mass. It can occur at any age, although the great majority occur between 10 and 20 years, ie. in children. Calcification is present on plain films in the majority, but is almost universally present on CT scans.
