Case 44

Varicosis coli

A young man with bloody diarrhoea

This 20 year old sailor presented after two episodes of bloody diarrhoea. He had no previous history of note, and was otherwise in good health. A small bowel examination was reported as normal.

Findings

There are serpiginous filling defects throughout the entire colon.

Barium enema - 59kb Barium enema - 81kb

Diagnosis

Varicosis coli

Discussion

A SMA and IMA angiogram (not shown) confirmed the diagnosis. There was no evidence of portal hypertension.

This is a rare congenital syndrome that may be asymptomatic. It has not previously been described as familial, but this patient's brother, father and grandfather were all found subsequently to have the condition. None had ever had symptoms.
