Case 29

Haemophilia

A child with a painful swollen ankle

This young boy presented with a chronic painful swollen ankle.

Further questioning revealed that there had been repeated attacks of swelling and pain in the ankle and many other joints were also involved.

Findings

There is avascular necrosis of the talus, presumably secondary to multiple haemarthroses. The elbow joint is also clearly involved.
