Case 1

Hair braids

Linear opacities on a chest X-ray

Findings

The vertical shadows cast over the lung fields represent hair braids (pony tails). This is most obvious over the left lung on this occasion; hair braids may be single or double. A brief examination of the patient would easily confirm their presence. The film should be repeated with the hair tied out of the way. Hair can also cause artefacts on skull and cervical spine films.
